Library Services: Books by Mail

As of March 1, 2009, the mail delivery option is available upon login only to those cardholders who have been pre-approved as eligible for mail service based on inability to receive books via pickup at a library.

The district does not have systems in place at present that would allow us to charge non-eligible cardholders for mail delivery, but we hope to make this option available in 2010. (A Feb. 28, 2010 article in The Columbian incorrectly suggested that this service would begin in March 2010; however, the exact launch date in 2010 has not yet been determined.)

You may qualify for mailing of library items at no charge if:

  • You have mobility issues that make it difficult for you to travel to a library to pick up books
  • There is no one else who can pick up books for you
  • Your driving distance from the nearest library is more than 10 miles.

If you think you may be eligible for mail service, check out the criteria on the application form, which is also available from libraries and bookmobiles. To apply, please note that the form is not automated; you must print, fill out, sign and submit it either via mail, fax or in person.

If you are eligible for Books by Mail service, you can change your hold’s pickup/delivery choice to library pickup at any time (we thank you for doing this whenever it's possible, to help reduce our postage costs). Here's how:

  1. Enter your library card number and PIN and click the Login for more options button in the Catalog
  2. Choose My Account then Review My Account
  3. Under Holds, click the Edit Hold button to the right of an individual title, or click Edit All Holds
  4. Choose the desired library from the drop-down pickup/delivery menu
  5. Click Accept Changes, then OK
  6. Click on Logout on the blue bar
