Aug. 17 library levy: Responding to community needs
A note from Executive Director
Bruce Ziegman

Not too long ago, I attended a day-long meeting at Cascade Park Community Library on a Monday. The library is closed to the public on Mondays -- a service cut we had to make in 2009 due to significantly reduced operating revenues. District-wide, we're operating with reduced hours at seven libraries, affecting nearly every area of our district.

It was frustrating on that Monday to see how many people came up and rattled the library’s doors, then stood there in confusion when they realized the library was closed. I wondered what needs went unmet that day when they couldn’t get into the library. Did they lose out on a day of job-searching because they couldn't use the library’s computers? Were they going to work on their resumes? Did they need to ask library staff for help researching a problem they were trying to solve? Were there books waiting for them to pick up? I wondered whether they would be able to visit later in the week, or if Monday the only day open in their schedules. I felt worst seeing families with young children turning away.

Our numbers of visitors and books checked out continues to rise, even with reduced hours. People are relying on their libraries for no-fee access to a wide range of items and services – Internet access, books and magazines to borrow, and help from staff to find answers to questions that Google just can’t solve, to name just a few. Where else can they go? The library is usually the only affordable option.

This is why we have placed a levy measure on the August 17 ballot. If it passes, the lost open hours will be restored in seven libraries. We also will add significantly to our book budget so we can better meet increasing demand. With approval, the additional cost to homeowners would be about $20 per year for a home valued at $250,000.

If you stop by the library this month, you’ll see staff wearing lanyards that say, "Ask me about the LIBRARY LEVY." You’ll also see posters, Q&A sheets and mini-bookmarks with information about the ballot measure. A political campaign is busy getting out information, too – their web site is www.voteforlibraries.com. Check it out!

New! Reading suggestions in our Catalog
Have you noticed anything extra when you look at the information about a book in the library’s Catalog? NoveList, a library tool for exploring reading suggestions, has enhanced your book discovery experience. Look up a book you’ve read and liked – or a title you’re on the waiting list for – and see links to titles you may also enjoy. If the book is part of a series, you’ll also find a list of all the titles in that series. Just in time for finding some good summer reads!

"Pub in the Park" will benefit FVRL Foundation
The FVRL Foundation will receive proceeds from this summer's "Pub in the Park," a service area offered in conjunction with the Riverview Six to Sunset concert series. Beginning July 8, the concert series will be held on Thursdays in Vancouver's Esther Short Park from 6-8 p.m. To purchase seating, take advantage of summer savings/table packages or for additional information, contact the FVRL Foundation at 360-699-8846 or foundation@fvrl.org.
