Helping Troubled Youth
We're reaching out to incarcerated youth, with FVRL Foundation support
A message from Bruce Ziegman, Executive Director
I've been thinking about the role our libraries play in people's lives and what we mean to the community. One way we’re helping out that really tugs at my heart is through our Juvenile Detention Center program. Several of our staff make regular visits to the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center to drop off new books for the students incarcerated there. Funding for the books is provided by the FVRL Foundation. Numerous teens have written to us to tell us what the books mean to them. Below are a few inspiring excerpts from their letters.
"Thank you…for showing concern and compassion for me…for providing hope, where others feel there is none."
"Reading…has got me to thinking about my life and what I have to do to change it."
"Books are one of the most important things here at Juvenile Detention. Not only do they confront us but they also keep us occupied and inspire us."
"Your books help me improve a lot of things that go on in my life. For example, my style of reading, vocabulary, comprehension, the understanding of other people, and make me an all around better person."
"I thank you for your contribution to my mind."
Libraries really do change lives!

Winners announced:
Teens' Fall Writing Contest
Find out who the winners are - they're now posted on our teen page! I'm very pleased with this year's participation that included more than 300 teens in Southwest Washington and the Columbia River Gorge. Entries included short stories, comics, poetry and song lyrics. Many schools within the library's service area elected to make this writing contest part of their curriculum and encouraged their students to submit entries for extra credit.
Winners were announced at a "Cosplay" (costume play) at Vancouver Community Library, where teens dressed up as their favorite characters, made candy sushi, played Dance Dance Revolution, and watched an anime movie. Everyone had a great time! The stories will be published in a booklet in late November that can be checked out from your local library. --Jen Studebaker, Young Adult Services Coordinator
