Did you hear the one about...?
by Jan Johnston in Content Management
With everything that’s going on in the world these days, I sometimes find myself getting way too serious about life. What better way to cast off some of the gloom than to find reasons to laugh in a good book?
I realize that humor is very much an individual thing, but here are some titles that bring a smile to my face:
|
The Dangerous Book for Dogs: A Parody by Joe Garden.
If you have a dog, try reading it out loud to Fido. But don’t let the cat hear you...
|
Cat Getting Out of a Bag and Other Observations by Jeffrey Brown.
Cat people, you’ll be able to relate to every drawing.
|
Theories of Everything: Selected, Collected, and Health-Inspected Cartoons, 1978-2006 by Roz Chast.
Roz Chast has drawn cartoons for the New Yorker for years. We’re talking funny stuff here.
|
The Gallery of Regrettable Food by James Lileks.
All the worst food cooked up for families in the 50’s and 60’s. One of the few books I’ve read that made me laugh until I cried. If bad furniture is more your thing, try the same author’s Interior Desecrations.
|
How to Build a Robot Army by Daniel H. Wilson.
Why are robots funny? Somehow, they just are...
|
Tales of Graceful Aging from the Planet Denial by Nicole Hollander.
Getting older can be a bummer, but Ms. Hollander is here to help all women face the inevitable with wit and attitude.
|
McSweeney’s Joke Book of Book Jokes.
Didn’t I tell you books can be funny? At last — a whole book devoted to book-related humor...long overdue, in my opinion (yuk, yuk)
|
Dog Food by Saxton Freymann.
If you aren’t familiar with Mr. Freymann’s incredible carvings using fruits and vegetables, go to the library right now and find one of his books. He is truly “all ages” friendly, and this particular title is my favorite. Banana beagles — what’s funnier than that?
