VANCOUVER, Wash. – Dr. Joseph Janes, a renowned national expert on digital reference and an associate professor at the University of Washington Information School, will be the keynote speaker at the third annual Altrusa Library Service Award dinner, to be held Tuesday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Camas Public Library.
A highlight of the dinner event will be announcement of the winner of the 2004 Altrusa Library Service Award, to be presented to an outstanding individual employed at one of the more than 50 Clark County libraries. Fourteen nominees are in the running for the 2004 award, which includes a $500 check for the winner’s use to benefit his or her library. Nominees are:

The Library Service Award is sponsored by Altrusa International Incorporated of Clark County, Wash., a service organization that created the award as part of their efforts to further literacy.
The title of Dr. Janes' dinner address will be “Google and What Happens Next.” Dr. Janes is a widely published columnist and speaker on the subject of electronic access to information. He teaches reference, online searching, research methods and statistics, and the use of Internet technologies in librarianship.
Dr. Janes will also conduct a 4:30 p.m. workshop, "Survival of the Information Fittest," for library professionals. He will represent the University of Washington at a 5:30 p.m. reception honoring the iSchool's 90th anniversary in 2004. All Southwest Washington and Portland-area iSchool alumni have been invited to attend the reception, which will be hosted by the iSchool Alumni office and open to all attendees.
The workshop, reception and dinner will be held in the upstairs community area at Camas Public Library, 625 NE 4th Avenue, Camas, Wash.
The cost of the workshop is $10 and the dinner is $25 per person, with paid reservations required by Friday, April 23. Reservation forms are available at all Fort Vancouver Regional Library District branches in Clark County (Battle Ground, Cascade Park, Ridgefield, Three Creeks Vancouver, Vancouver Mall and Washougal), Clark College’s Cannell Library, Camas Public Library, and the library at Washington State University-Vancouver. The form is also available electronically at www.fvrl.org.
Winner of the 2003 Library Service Award was Sherry Braga, volunteer coordinator for Fort Vancouver Regional Library District. The 2002 winner was Sean McGill, Washougal Community Librarian, who has been nominated all three years (nominees may win only one time).
