BATTLE GROUND, Wash.-- Exciting changes are coming for the Battle Ground Community Library in April and May. In preparation for the opening of the new library, the current building will close on April 30. The Grand Opening Celebration for the new library, which is located in Battle Ground Village at 1207 SE 8th Way, will be held on Saturday, May 30 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The schedule for closing the current library and opening the new facility is as follows:
  • Thursday, April 30 -- Last day of operation for the current library on Main Street. It will close permanently at 8 p.m. During the following two weeks, staff will be busy moving books and preparing the new building for opening.
  • Friday, May 15 through Friday, May 29 -- The new library will be open with reduced hours and Monday closure. Hours will be: Tuesday through Thursday, Noon to 8:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, Noon to 6:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 30 -- The Grand Opening Celebration will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Festivities will include speeches by dignitaries, a ribbon cutting, refreshments provided by Friends of Battle Ground Community Library, and performances by Gideon Freudmann of CelloBop and the Maple Grove Primary School choir. Guides will be stationed throughout the library to help direct patrons.
  • Tuesday, June 2 -- Regular open hours begin at the new library: Tuesday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

From May 1 to 14 (between closing the old building and opening the new one), these services will be available:
  • The bookmobile will be available in the parking lot at the old library on Main Street, offering limited library services -- including holds pickup -- at the following times:
    • Saturday, May 2 -- 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Monday, May 4 -- Noon to 6:30 p.m.
    • Saturday, May 9 -- 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Monday, May 11 -- Noon to 6:30 p.m.
  • While the Battle Ground library is closed, patrons are encouraged to visit other FVRL libraries in the area, including La Center, Ridgefield, Three Creeks and Vancouver Mall.
  • The catalog and many library services are available 24/7 at www.fvrl.org, or you can call the main library in Vancouver at (360) 695-1566.
  • Book-return boxes at the old location will be locked at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7. Books may be returned at the new library in Battle Ground Village beginning at 5:00 p.m. on May 7, through the slots on the south side of the building, or at other FVRL libraries.

The new 13,000-square foot library will offer nearly 10,000 more square feet of space than the current building. It features a reading room with a beautiful rock fireplace, and larger designated areas for adult literacy, young adults, and children's books and activities, and study rooms and more computers. A community room will be available for outside group use.

Volunteers are needed to help move books to the new library building on May 8 and 9, and to help with the Grand Opening on May 30. To volunteer, call Sherry Braga at (360) 699-8812 or send an email to MoveBG@fvrl.org.
