Library District Launches 2009 Teen Writing Contest
District-wide -
Award-winning author Ellen Hopkins will present prizes at an Oct. 23 celebration in Vancouver
VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Youth in grades 6-12 will have a chance to showcase their best storylines in Fort Vancouver Regional Library District's 11th annual writing contest. The competition officially begins Monday, Sept. 7 and ends Friday, Oct. 2, 2009.
The contest is open to all teens who live within, are homeschooled in, or attend school in the FVRL library district, Woodland School District, and Yale Valley Library District.
Submissions may be short stories, poetry, comic strips or other formats. All genres of writing are encouraged (i.e., horror, science fiction, romance, Western, fantasy, etc.). Judging will focus on the words in each submission, not the format. Completed entry forms must accompany submissions and are available at any FVRL library or bookmobile, and on the library's Web site at http://www.fvrl.org/teens/.
Entries must be 1,000 words or less and typed or clearly handwritten in English. Entries may be faxed to (360) 693-2681, turned in on disk or paper, or emailed as an attachment to teens@fvrl.org. Entries will be accepted at any FVRL location until closing on Friday, Oct. 2 (check schedules for hours; the North Bonneville library is not open Friday). Entries are limited to one per person.
Winners will be selected in two age groups: 6th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade.
The winning entries will be announced at a party to be held at Vancouver Community Library (main library) on Friday, Oct. 23, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Award-winning writer Ellen Hopkins, author of young-adult books including Crank, Identical and Burned, will be on hand to present prizes to the winning writers, and to talk about her books and writing.
The library's teen Web pages will feature the winning stories, which may be edited for spelling and grammar. Questions? Call Jen at (360) 759-4800. # # #
