As a parent, you want to do everything you can to get your young child off to a good start. Take advantage of all the Library has to offer you to help your early learner thrive.
Baby Sign Language
Signing with your very young children is a great way to communicate and share language even before they are verbal. Look for books and videos on the topic in our catalog, or watch instructional videos with Dawn Babb Prochovnic on our Early Learning YouTube channel.
Vancouver Community Library's Early Learning Center
Vancouver Community Library is home to the largest library-based Early Learning Center (ELC) in the United States. Designed, fabricated and installed by Burgeon Group, specialists in early-learning facilities in public libraries, this highly-interactive and literacy-rich environment is designed to encourage parents and children aged 0 to 7 to play collaboratively. Created with literacy incorporated into every element, the center is a place to foster a love for learning and school readiness.
The center looks like a bright, beautiful playground, which is exactly the point: PLAY is the work of early childhood. The imagination-fueling play the ELC encourages gets children questioning and learning about the world around them, and finding inspiration for their innate curiosity and imagination. While they’re having fun engaging and exploring, they’re also developing pre-literacy skills critical for school readiness. Each component of the center has a purpose relating to the skills of reading, writing, singing, talking and playing and has several layers of experience to encourage you to visit again and again. The center is also rich with inspiration and ideas for activities to practice at home.
