Internet Search Tools for Homework
CyberSleuth-Kids
CyberSleuth-Kids lists many useful web sites for homework assignments.
Search tip: Some sub-categories on the CyberSleuth-Kids directory can be hard to find. Click on the main category "History" or "Math" or "Geography" to see all the sub-categories under that heading.
KidsClick
KidsClick lists about 5,000 web sites in various categories. For each web site in the directory, KidsClick tells what the web site is about, if the site has illustrations, and if the page is easy to read (Reading Level 3-6) or more difficult to read (Reading Level 7+).
Parents and Teachers: Most of the web sites described as Reading Level 3-6 are written at a fifth or sixth grade reading level.
Multnomah County Library Homework Center
A great directory of homework sites. This one focuses on trying to find "Megasites". Megasites are web sites that have links to other web sites on the same topic.
Yahooligans
Yahooligans is the largest of all Internet Directories for kids. It has many useful sites for homework.
Search Engines
A tool that lets you search for web sites using key words. Most search engines usually only check part of each web site for your key words. It is also helpful to know that each search engine is only able to search a portion of the Internet.
Ask Jeeves for Kids
With this search engine you can ask a regular question and "Ask Jeeves" will try to find a few of the best sites to answer your questions.
Family Friendly Search
This is a meta-search service that lets you search four kid-friendly search engines and directories at one time: Yahooligans, AOL Kids, Kids Click, and Saluki Search.
Search tip: Remember that search engines search only the front pages of a web site. So even if your search comes up with zero hits, the information you want may still be available on one of the four directories listed - you will just have to spend additional time linking through the directories to find it.
