Do you want to know my favorite thing about July? YAAB Summer Games! We have two events, one for Clark County teens and one for teens who live near White Salmon, WA. YAAB Summer Games is a big gathering of teens who come together for an outdoor field-day type event with a twist. This year we are featuring events like Catapoultry and Pop-Rockets. Are you intrigued? See the YAAB Games section below for more details. Click the pictures below, which are video links, for a silly preview!

YA Author Spotlight: Kim Antieau
clipartclipart

Kim Antieau has published several works of YA fiction, including her latest book Ruby's Imagine. She lives in Stevenson, WA and often hosts workshops about writing and discusses her books with teens.

Q: What made you decide to write teen fiction?
Kim: It wasn't a conscious decision. I started writing Mercy, Unbound one night. When I finished, the book was shorter than usual and my main protagonist was a teenage girl. I sent it to my agent, and he sold it as a YA book. But once I started writing teen books, I loved it.

Q: Which of your books would you recommend to a teen who is reading your work for the first time?
Kim: If you like intense books where a group of girls are trying to figure out their problems, Mercy, Unbound is for you. If you like more of an adventure story (that is also deeply moving) Broken Moon is your best bet. If you like something that is a bit of a challenge, where the main character talks in a unique dialect and tries to survive a hurricane (with a touch of romance), Ruby's Imagine is for you.

Q: Do you have any tips for aspiring young authors?
Kim: Read lots, write lots, get outdoors and experience the world.

Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be?
Kim: Being able to heal the sick and bring peace to the world. (Is that two superpowers? Ah well, I'm a writer. I did a rewrite on your question.)

The Host
-- Stephenie Meyer

This story begins with the end of Earth’s great race, humanity. Our planet is invaded, our bodies taken by a parasitic alien race known as the Souls who continue to live peacefully as us.

One among them, Wanderer, has been given the host body of Melanie Stryder, a rebel who knows the location of the remaining resistance. But Melanie refuses to be suppressed and disappear.

Soon she and Wanderer become unlikely allies, and Wanderer must find a place among the resisters while battling her guilt, her love, and the destructive power of her very being while trying to protect the remaining human race from extinction.
