WorldCat in RedLaser iPhone App
Thanks to some quick footwork by a few of OCLC's staff and the guys at Occipital, the company behind the iPhone app RedLaser, WorldCat.org libraries now appear within the mobile apps item search pages.
RedLaser users can scan a book and see the libraries near them that have that book. Then they can click to one of those libraries and get hours, phone numbers and driving directions.
We're putting WorldCat.org data to use and putting libraries right in the mobile user's flow.

Will this give results for ALL Worldcat libraries or only USA? I'm not getting any Worldcat results here in the UK.

Doesn't work in the RedLaser app I downloaded just now from the Belgian App Store (version 2.5.0). Is there a difference?

The RedLaser application has launched for the US market at this time. The Occipital team limited the search to just US libraries right now though that is expected to change. You might watch the Occipital blog: http://occipital.com/blog/.

When will it be available for the DROID phone from Verizon/Google?

Hi Debbie, good question. Right now RedLaser is only available for iPhones. But there is a comparison shopping app for Droids called Compare Everywhere that has the same type of functionality and also delivers library results. It doesn't scan the bar code, but it does include library results. You should be able to download Compare Everywhere from the app menu on your phone.

Do you have to configure anything to enable the WorldCat component? I have scanned several barcodes at this point and just keep getting purchase options and no libraries. This sounds wonderful, but just not working for me...

Beth, No. You don't have to do anything to get the libraries to show up. Right now WorldCat.org is only returning results to RedLaser for newer books. Probably those published in the last couple years. We are making some changes that, when complete, will include nearly all books with bar codes. These changes *should* be done in early March.

OK, thank you! I am trying current books with no luck, but I will keep playing with it.
