We’re heading into Healthy Aging Month! It’s a great reminder that while you may not be a spring chicken, you’re not a soup chicken, either. Healthy aging is about doing what you can to manage your own health. For example, you don’t have to start training for a marathon at 60, unless that’s been a lifelong dream. If you’re fairly sedentary, make it a goal to get 15-20 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. You don’t have to call a divorce lawyer and have a messy breakup with potatoes - but perhaps you could order a salad instead of fries, every other time you eat out. Stop binge watching The Great British Baking Show? Never! But try something different, and go to a talk at the Clark County Historical Museum, or look into the WSU Master Gardener program. Small changes can still yield great results in the long run. And variety is what stimulates your brain function.
Information is a key component to managing your health and wellness. A good first stop is to schedule a checkup with your doctor, and be sure to review all your medications. The Area Agency on Aging & Disabilities of Southwest Washington offers resources and programs. Below is a list of books published in 2024/25 related to aging in healthy ways:
