I was thrilled to see that June is Audiobook Appreciation Month—and for the opportunity to share some of my favorites with you. I commute about 25 minutes each way to and from work. Taking advantage of that time to listen to audiobooks really increases my ability to get through the books I want to read. And I’ve come to enjoy the audio format as much as traditional print—or maybe even more—which hasn’t always been true. The narrator really makes or breaks the story, though. If I’m not vibing with one, I stop and get the physical book. Overall, I think the quality and variety of book narrators has gone up tremendously since I was listening to them on the bus to Portland in my early career in the 90s. Back then, they were a way to pass the long commute without the motion sickness of reading in a moving vehicle. Now, they’re an enjoyable pastime. Below are some of my favorites with narrators I enjoy. Of course, if you need assistance getting started with digital audiobooks, we can help.
Did you know you can do an author search in the library catalog using the name of your favorite narrator? Change the “search by” term to “author” and use the narrator’s name. You’ll find the items in the library collection they’ve narrated. It’s a great way to find a new title by a favorite voice! ~ Janet
