I have always been a bookworm, which will probably surprise no one. I loved to read as a child, and when I learned to write, I made my own books with my small vocabulary and my limited artistic ability. My vocabulary has developed a lot since those days, but my art skills are pretty much at the same level.
My parents didn’t go to college—I’m a first-generation college graduate—but they put tremendous value on education. Both of my parents read to me, taught me to read, and made sure I had the reading material I craved. Mom took me to the bookmobile that visited near our home weekly, and each month we went to the big library in town where I could check out enough books to keep me reading until the next visit. Some of my favorite memories are the books Mom and I read aloud together, including the Marguerite Henry series and other books that gratified our shared love of animals.
It really isn’t surprising that I ended up working at a library. Since September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, I’m going to read some of the newer books about libraries and librarians. I hope you’ll join me. And, if you don’t have one already, be sure to get a library card!
