Tucked on a special shelf at many FVRLibraries locations are books written by our youngest patrons — self-published stories waiting to be discovered. One book at Vancouver Community Library stopped us in our tracks.
Written by Winnie, a regular Vancouver patron, The Girl Who Loved the Library had a delightful plot and such heartfelt affection for libraries that we knew we had to do something special with it. So we decided to bring it to life.
Our children's librarians already knew and loved Winnie, so we recruited them as lookouts — pass along the message next time she comes in. We waited. Then, a small stroke of luck: Winnie had recently entered our biannual Bookmark Contest, and her entry form had her parents' contact information right on it. Bingo. We emailed Winnie's mom, explained how we'd stumbled onto The Girl Who Loved the Library, and asked if Winnie would narrate the animation herself. The whole family was in. They even had recording equipment at home.
Our graphics team scanned every page of Winnie's book and animated each one — and they used Winnie's own handwriting for the subtitles. With the one-minute animation complete, we invited Winnie and her family to Vancouver Community Library for a special screening. We feasted on popcorn, celebrated Winnie, and watched her story come to life on screen. Afterward, Winnie announced: "I know what I'm going to write about for the next edition!" We can't wait for the sequel.
Watch the animation here, we guarantee it will make your day!
