Book Beat: Summer Days

Submitted by J. Alder on

Summer at FVRLibraries is always exciting and busy. Our Summer Reading program offers extra events for all ages. This summer comes with additional ways to enjoy and engage with the library. If you feel creative, we invite you to design our next library card. Our Library Card Design Competition is open through June 30. The Library Road Trip Passport event continues, and summer is a great time to visit those libraries in the Gorge! Get passport stamps, answer questions, and enter to win a prize. You can even participate from the comfort of home. Information about both programs is available in the library.

On August 5, voters will decide on a library levy lid lift—a funding measure that shapes what open hours and services are delivered in the years ahead. The levy provides 96% of the library district’s funding. Find out what’s on the ballot at fvrl.org/levy.

  • Summer light on Nantucket : a novel by Nancy Thayer. Blythe, a divorced mom of four, is more than ready for their annual summer vacation on Nantucket. But she doesn’t anticipate multiple love interests while she deals with teenagers and ex-in-laws.
  • Mockingbird summer : a novel by Lynda Rutledge. In segregated 1964 Texas, 13-year-old Corky befriends the daughter of her family’s new Haitian housekeeper and shares her favorite novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, with her. What follows is a firestorm of racial tension and cultural change, helped by the power of the written word, true friendship, and admiration.
  • This summer will be different by Carley Fortune. When her best friend suddenly flees Toronto a week before her wedding, Lucy drops everything to follow her to Prince Edward Island. Her mission is to help Bridget through her crisis and resist the one man she's never been able to—Bridget’s brother.
  • The summer of you and me by Denise Hunter. Maggie Reynolds is finally ready for love again--until the past shows up in the form of someone who may or may not be the late husband she thought she'd lost.
  • Just for the summer by Abby Jimenez. Justin has a curse. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When he finds a woman with the same problem, they come up with a plan. They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will work on each other, and they'll both go on to find the loves of their life. But a lot happens along the way.

Library tip of the month: Love magazines but not the cost or clutter? You can get the digital versions of your favorites from the library! Learn more from the digital magazines webpage or call 360-906-5000 for assistance. Of course, we still have the originals, too, if you like the ink and paper version.
